Keys To Higher Jumps In Basketball

It’s no secret that height is might in basketball. Bigger, taller people always have an advantage and while you can always do something to improve your speed, your shooting and all around performance, sadly there is nothing much you can do to increase your height. But we all know Spud Webb. He is the 5 foot 8 inch NBA player who not only became a slam dunk champion but proved to the world that height can be made irrelevant to people who are willing to pay the price and looks for a solution to the height challenge. There have been many others who came before and after Spud Webb, and just like him gave proof that the height advantage can be mitigated by a high vertical jumping ability.

The average American is taller than Spud Webb so no doubt, you already have an advantage. Now, the object is to improve your leaping abilities such as to better defend and block opponents, to increase passing interceptions and receiving skills, or to gracefully execute a dunk. The following are keys to higher jumps in basketball:

Training. You can keep watching TV how Vince Carter does it till your eyes bleed but if you don’t go out on the gym and sweat it out, you’ll never see any difference in your game. Continuous correct practice is a key. Your training coach should be able to help you design a program that considers your current physical shape and abilities, including weaknesses. And while most of what you’ll read in the internet places premium on developing calf muscles, the upper body strength needs to be worked on as well. The legs and the knees are the main movers alright, but the arm swing contributes at least 5% to the overall effort of jumping. You will need to develop strength before you can develop power and explosiveness that your favorite basketball idol already possesses.

Diet. This one is no brainer. If you are under a strict and intensive training program, your body will demand energy to sustain itself under the stress you are subjecting it. Adequate balanced nutrition is a key. Your diet will fuel your physical labors and should complement the training program you are into. You will need to rehydrate during intense workout sessions and to replenish calories you burned. Another thing worth considering, if you are carrying excess weight, you might want to lose it. Achieving higher jump in basketball is requires more work if you are overweight. While you labor for strength and explosiveness, do not forget to properly feed the body.

Recovery. The human body is the most perfect machine ever created. Even then, it needs to rest and to recuperate if it is to run efficiently. The muscles stretched and ripped apart during workouts need to heal and to recover to provide you with the strength necessary to jump higher. Adequate amount of sleep and time away from stress and avoid factors that contribute to stress is a key. Just as we call a timeout in basketball to alter momentums or work out a better strategy and have more precise execution of play, so does our mind and body need time outs to function better and help us achieve the higher jump in basketball that we so long for.
