Introduction To Vertical Jump
Vertical jump is a measurement of the height that can be achieved by an individual or athlete elevating off the ground from a motionless, standstill point. It is the the ability to raise the center of gravity to a higher level vertically. This is achieved by employing the use of the body muscles only and nothing else.
Vertical jump is most often used in the field of athletics and sports. It is used to measure the performances of these athletes such as in volleyball, track and field, football and basketball. However, having mentioned this, most sports measure the players’ and athletes’ vertical jumping ability along with other physical examinations. It is a part of the physical examinations and not so much measured on its own.
The vertical jump is a commonly employed method in testing athleticism in sports especially football and basketball. A vertical jump of over 40 inches is considered to be very rare and achieved only by a handful of athletes. The vertical jump is also a vital component of the
the ‘SPARQ’, an exam used to assess athleticism in sports.
How is vertical measured? There are a variety of methods to measure an athlete or individual’s vertical jump. The first and often easiest method is to have the athlete jump up against a flat-surfaced wall, with only a flat surface under their feet. Example of this is to get an athlete reach up to a flat wall in a gym floor and then take note of the highest point that is reached flat-footed (often referred to as the “standing reach”). The distance between the standstill point and the markings on the flat-surfaced wall reached through jumping is referred to as the athlete’s standing vertical jump.
The above is the simplest method. Methods that are more scientifically accurate have been known to be devised, such as the pressure pad. It is used to measure the time an athlete takes to complete a jump and through a kinematics equation (h = g*t^2/8), computers would be able to calculate the vertical jump from the time in the air. This method is also prone to weaknesses as athletes are liable to be able to cheat.
A method employing the use of infrared laser is known to be more efficient and effective. When an individual jumps from a standstill point and breaks the laser plane using his hands, the height will be measured.
NFL (America’s National Football League) uses a method which is used mostly by the highest levels of professional performance and collegiate testing. It comprise of 70 14-inch prongs placed 0.5 inches apart vertically which requires the athletes to reach through vertical jump without a running start or step.
Vertical jump is a key component in sports performance. The main misconception regarding vertical jump is that the jump is measured from a run-up as opposed to a standstill. It is with our sincere hopes that the air, at least some, is cleared with this brief introduction to vertical jump.
