Increase Vertical Leap With The Right Exercises
Vertical Leap can be improved with the right kind of exercises. It has to be kept in mind that these exercises should be tailor-made for you and not somebody else for you to be able to get the best out of it. Exercises, along with good nutrition, the right equipment and the proper advice can help you to achieve a better vertical leap. Below are some of the many exercises, along with its descriptions that you can carry out.
- Laundry Jump : This exercise is intended to enhance the effectiveness of lateral movements with emphasis on high velocity change of directions and cutting ability.
Start by using a paper bag, cone or other similar objects at an elevated height of between 8 to 24 inches high. Jump laterally, as far and high as possible over object repeatedly.
- No Arm Hops : This is an intense series of hops with the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of the calf and hip flexor muscles.
Start by jumping and lifting legs upward. Lift legs up to the chest level before bringing it down to the ground level again.
- Split Leg Hop : It is intended to improve single leg effectiveness. The exercise uses a series of running/jumping motion with the purpose of enhancing the lower body muscles.
It is a simple bounding exercise that consists of exaggerated motion. The leg should be
in or near a 90-degree angle when landing. It is important to target the maximum distance and height.
- Double Leg Hop : This exercise is similar to the single leg hop with less emphasize on the body. Again, strive for maximum distance when carrying out this exercise.
- Single-Leg Bounding : Similar to the split-leg hop but emphasis is placed on horizontal jumping/acceleration.
This is an exercise that consists primarily of multiple long jumps. Target maximum distance when performing this exercise.
- Power Skip : This is a good introductory plyo with good low impact. It is intended to work the calf muscles as well as hip flexor. Similar to a single leg take off and is vital for those who intend to dunk on the run.
The exercise which uses an exaggerated skipping motion requires one to lift the leg up to the chest level when skipping with both the arms swinging upward when leg is brought up.
- Rim Jump : Another introductory low intensity low plyo. Intended to work the muscles needed for vertical jumping effectively. This is a simple exercise which uses a backboard or other high objects.
Start by jumping up in a maximal static jump and reach for the highest point with one hand before switching to the other hand.
These are but among several exercises that can increase a person’s vertical leap. Other form of exercises include the ankle hop, backward throw, accelerations. There are also exercises with weights which we will discuss in detail in forthcoming articles.
